TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) - FAW

Gain a nationally regulated Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification with comprehensive, practical training for workplace first aiders.

The TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is a comprehensive three-day workplace first aid qualification for people who are, or are preparing to become, designated First Aiders at Work.

The course develops the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to assess and manage a broad range of workplace injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies.

Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid requirements, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, casualty assessment and confident emergency response.

Who should attend?

This qualification is suitable for employees who may be required to provide first aid following an accident, injury or sudden illness at work.

It is particularly appropriate where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies the need for the more comprehensive First Aid at Work qualification rather than the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course.

The appropriate level of training should take account of factors such as workplace hazards and risks, workforce size and distribution, working patterns, accident history, employees travelling or working remotely, and access to emergency medical assistance.

What does the course cover?

The First Aid at Work course includes the essential emergency skills covered by Emergency First Aid at Work and develops these considerably further.

Learners will cover:

• Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
• Infection prevention, consent and incident recording
• Scene safety and emergency incident management
• Primary and secondary casualty surveys
• Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Management of an unresponsive casualty
• Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
• Choking
• Seizures
• External and life-threatening bleeding
• Wound management and shock
• Minor injuries
• Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
• Head and suspected spinal injuries
• Chest injuries
• Burns and scalds
• Eye injuries
• Suspected poisoning
• Anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Asthma attacks
• Hypoglycaemic emergencies

Training has a strong practical emphasis, with learners participating in hands-on skills exercises and realistic first aid scenarios designed to develop confidence as well as competence.

Anaphylaxis and emergency adrenaline

Current course content includes the recognition and emergency management of anaphylaxis, including appropriate use of adrenaline.

Training includes practical use of an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) training device and awareness of current emergency adrenaline options, including adrenaline nasal spray, where appropriate.

Regulated qualification

Successful learners achieve the TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).

This is a regulated qualification, providing independently assessed and nationally recognised evidence of workplace first aid competence.

Course duration

3 days – 18 hours of instructor-led training, excluding breaks.

The course is normally delivered over three full training days.

Assessment

Learners are assessed through a combination of practical demonstration and knowledge assessment.

Practical assessment is embedded throughout the course. Learners must successfully demonstrate the required first aid competencies and achieve the required knowledge assessment across the qualification to gain certification.

Course delivery

This qualification is available through our scheduled courses and can also be delivered on demand for organisations at their own premises.

A suitable training space is required to allow learners to participate fully in practical exercises, including CPR and floor-based casualty-management activities.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive the TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) certificate, valid for three years.

Annual first aid skills and knowledge refreshers are recommended to help workplace first aiders maintain competence and confidence between formal requalification courses.

Learners should have sufficient command of English to understand the course content and complete the required assessments. If a learner requires additional support or reasonable adjustments, please contact us before booking so that appropriate arrangements can be considered.

Need to requalify?

If you already hold an eligible First Aid at Work qualification that is approaching expiry, you may be able to complete a two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course rather than undertaking the full three-day qualification again.

Please contact us before booking if your existing certificate has already expired or you are uncertain about your eligibility for the requalification route.

EFAW or FAW?

The appropriate level of first aid training should be determined through your employer's first aid needs assessment.

The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification provides the essential skills required to respond to common workplace first aid emergencies.

The three-day First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification provides substantially broader training for first aiders who may need to manage a wider range of injuries, illnesses and more complex workplace emergencies.

Need a different qualification route?

Vital Signs Scotland provides workplace first aid training through a range of certification routes, including RQF, SCQF and VTQ qualifications and courses.

This course leads specifically to the TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) and should be selected where a regulated RQF qualification is required or preferred.
